I’m watching HBO’s “Big Little Lies” which is set in Monterey, CA and it’s stirring up fond memories of my last years living in California which were spent in Pacific Grove. Pacific Grove is a charming seaside village that occupies the tip of the Monterey peninsula. We lived in this artist cottage nestled hillside that was hugged by trees covered in Spanish moss. Our view was over the tree tops of Pebble Beach to the Pacific ocean. It was enchanting and I wrote like a fiend while living there. Now, back to my watching the character of Madeline, played brilliantly by Reese Witherspoon, driving along Pacific Coast Highway in “Big Little Lies”. The credit title sequence manages to capture some of the magic of driving that particular stretch of the PCH and it frames the memory I’m sharing perfectly. Kudos to HBO for posting it to their YouTube channel so, I’m able to share it with you. Enjoy the view.
One of the memories the show has stirred up is of dinners I’ve enjoyed at Sierra Mar, the restaurant at the Post Ranch Inn in Big Sur. Everything comes together within this glass, wood, stone and metal jewelry box perched atop a cliff overlooking the Pacific ocean and this is where you’re having dinner. Dining at Sierra Mar is, without a doubt, a “Life is Good” moment.
Our goal was to be in the restaurant’s lounge or on its terrace, weather permitting enjoying cocktails and a Big Sur sunset over the Pacific before dinner. Plan B enjoy the sunset during dinner which is of course, equally dramatic. Here are menu links to sate your inner foodie: Lunch | Dinner | Wine List
The buildings that comprise Post Ranch Inn are in the forest while appearing not to disturb mother nature which of course defies logic. Enjoy this commanding aerial video of the Post Ranch Inn that provides a birds-eye view of their seaside environs.
I have never stayed at the inn but I have toured it and the grounds and this is Zen for “sale” albeit in a hotel-moment. The quiet majesty and power of Big Sur coupled with the organic architecture and design of the Inn manifests in a serene cohabitation. That being said, here are links to their magical and unique accommodations.
Post Ranch Inn also has an award-winning spa offering you the choice of enjoying your spa services in your guest room, a scenic spa treatment room or the couples spa suite.
It’s interesting when our lives come back to us via triggered memories from hearing a song, seeing a scene in a movie or in this instance a TV show. I hope you enjoyed my trip down memory lane as much as I’ve enjoyed writing it for you. Enjoy the day.
